A long busy day, chitter chatter, running about, teaching, learning, I love to unwind by visiting the garden, or go for a walk or visit my favourite café for a cup of coffee.
I landed up at the coffee shop, ordered my cappuccino and tried to settle when my eyes met a sweet lady who signalled me to sit opposite her. Her eyes said a lot of things, they said, “Come here”. They said, “I haven’t spoken to someone in a while.” They said, “I want to be heard.”
I politely asked her if the seat was empty and she responded with a big smile, “Not if you sit on it”. She was reading a newspaper which she told me in our conversation that she already read it in details and was about to read it again.
I heard about her family, I heard about her work, her child hood days, her days in college and how she visits this café every day for the only meal of the day which she has at the café only.
All I did was just listen and held her hand at times when ever her eyes became moist. Her face lit up, her smile came back and there was hope.
In our journey called life, this life which is so fast paced, if we could give a thought and could find some time to spend with such dear friends who seek only company the world may become a better place for them to be.
If we could do a few things like being polite, listening to them, talking to them, eating with them, keep them company, appreciating their efforts, respect them, make them laugh, assist them to medical centres and visiting them or visiting senior citizen centres would be so remarkable.
Our acts of kindness will help us feel better, better for our body and our soul.
