The term ‘Need to Consult a Psychologist’ is one that is not often used. There is a hesitation associated with saying these words out loud. The stigma around the concept of mental health in our culture, along with the taboo of going to therapy, has gravely affected the way we cope with our problems. A barrier has been created between us and our right to be mentally healthy and happy. Sometimes an inherent feeling of shame washes over us when we think we need to consult a psychologist.  Others feel it is a sign of weakness to have to need someone else’s support to find a solution for their own problem. Many times when we feel our mental health is poor, we excuse it for mood swings. These obstacles we create for ourselves stop us from interpreting the signs that are pointing towards the ‘Need to Consult a Psychologist.

We must be more mindful of various signs that indicate the need for external help. The signs may vary in intensity and frequency. There are mornings when we feel drained out due to the previous day’s hard work. This can be considered a very normal effect. But if this effect is repetitively affecting you, it is time to pay attention to the cause. It is said that with rest, sunshine, water, exercise and nutritious food one can simply refresh themselves. But if the most basic activities are not helping you, then common sense dictates that there is more to the cause than just a previous day’s hard work. As individuals we must consciously observe our thoughts, feelings and behaviours to understand when we need to take a break, or when we need to ask for help.

On Tuesday, 27th of July, Simone Biles withdrew from the USA Team Olympic Gymnastics Finals.

She said and I quote – “I have to put my pride aside. I have to do what is right for me and focus on my mental health and not jeopardize my health and well-being. That is why I decided to take a step back.”

We must all learn from her today and not wait until a crisis or burn out to pause and decide what we really need for our mental health. It does not matter if you are an olympic winner or an office going individual. Your mental-health is a personal privilege and only you know what’s best for yourself, this includes consulting a psychologist when you see the signs and NOT dismissing them.

Mental health is not a destination, but a process. It’s about how you drive, not where you’re going,” Noam Spencer. With reference to this quote I would like to tell you that if your process includes consulting a psychologist it is VALID, no matter how many times you may have to take U-turns. I urge you to carefully go through the reasons mentioned in our Instagram post and choose for yourself, unapologetically, if you want or need professional help.
