You’re probably tired of reading that “therapy is a process”. It is indeed a journey one embarks upon often with a therapist/ psychologist, whether it is in person, online.

I find myself explaining this to my clients very often since most of us want to race ahead and get to the destination, rather than put in the hard work that this journey demands. I think many therapists would agree, that hard work is one of the reasons why some may be hesitant to come to therapy of beginning their therapeutic journey.

Why is it that we can’t simply skip to the destination? Why is the ‘work’ all important? It’s because what you learn on this sometimes arduous journey is exactly what we need to learn to cope and deal better with the concerns that are present and especially to cope better with the ones we’ll encounter in the future. If you jump to the destination directly, you may circumvent the current problem, but you are no more wiser to help yourself with future adversities.

Recently, I found myself reiterating this so often in sessions, but not in the global context of the therapeutic process. My clients and I find that we are often on multiple journeys within the process itself. Each of these journeys is so unique and individual. Each client’s cluster of journeys is most likely to be unique too.

So much for those who complain about not being able to travel since that past year and more… maybe you’d like to journey… inwards?
